Biswabrata Goswami
NANDIGRAM, April 19: Clashes continued for the second consecutive day in Nandigram between supporters of the Bhumi Ucched Protirodh Comm-ittee and the CPI-M.
At least 15 people were injured and two women were sexually harassed during the fighting ahead of the last withdrawal date of the nominations for the coming panchayat polls. Among the injured, 13 people were BUPC supporters and two people were CPI-M activists. The injured BUPC supporters have been admitted to the Tamluk district hospital in serious condition while the injured CPI-M activists were released from the local primary health centre after first aid.
Afraid of further attacks, about 300 BUPC supporters of Garcha-kraberia, Sona-chura, Adhikaripara and Gokul-nagar have already left their houses and taken shelter in the camps at Nandigram. To protest the CPI-M sponsored violence, the BUPC leaders have called a Thana-gherao programme at Nandigram tomorrow where the Trinamul Congress chief Miss Mamata Banerjee is likely to be present before attending a programme at Contai.
A 45-year-old woman of Adhikaripara in Gar-chakraberia, who was allegedly gang-raped after being dragged out of her house to a nearby field last night by a group of CPI-M goons, has been sent to the SSKM hospital in Kolkata for a medical examination today.
This woman was earlier gang-raped by CPI-M workers during the Nandi-gram recapture operation on 14 March last year. In connection with this incident, several CPI-M leaders have been accused and later, the sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two prominent CPI-M leaders.
Mr Taher also said “When we tried to rescue the injured persons to the hospital, the armed CPI-M men resisted us. We then lodged complaints with the Nandigram police but they refused to help us. We finally told the CRPF jawans who then came forward and helped us to take the injured persons to the hospital.”
Mr Ashoke Guria, secretariat member of the CPI-M Midnapore East district committee, blamed the Trinamul Congress for inviting violence and said, “They attacked our election rally first and washed off our walling at several places”.
Mr SS Panda, superintendent of police said no persons have been arrested in connection with the renewed violence yet.
